The students of the Foundation in Art and Design programme participated in an educational visit to the Benaki Museum-Pireos Building on February 8th. The visit was organized for the course “Preparation and Progression in Art & Design” and its main aim was for students to become familiar with the different ways in which one can present an art project. The AMC students had the opportunity to visit the below three very interesting collections-exhibitions :
1. Zissis Kotionis' architecture exhibition "Multidomes", curated by Yorgos Tzirtzilakis, radically criticizing the Greek housing model of "polykatikia" as well as the urban buildings' model in general.
Students saw conceptual models of space structures which are not typical architectural models. Apart from the models, they also had access to text descriptions and the aims of each concept, famous quotes of architects and philosophers which constitute an inspiration for creation, as well as how one can present 3D concepts in two dimensions and the concept of mixed reality one can create by photo processing in Photoshop.
2. 14 F/21 GR
Young architects in Greece and France
This exhibition is a tribute to the oeuvre of a younger generation of architects in France and in Greece. Presenting architects and creative teams – 14 from France and 21 from Greece – it records a wealth of architectural narratives about the contemporary urban and natural landscape, revealing common soul searching in the contemporary architectural practices in both countries.
Students observed, photographed and studied photographs, architectural plans, models and digital projections of buildings, taken by young Greek and French architects in the whole world. They saw the use of different materials for the models, as well as how a presentation can be organized in specific space and structure.
3. Urban Box
An exhibition of the participating projects of the National Architecture Student Competition for the design of aluminium structures. The Competition was organized by the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, in cooperation with the Aluminium Association of Greece and its main subject was the design of aluminium structures. The Competition aimed to explore the characteristics of aluminium as the exclusive material used for a small structure.
A very interesting part of the exhibition was how one can present an idea on an A0 sign and the means the competition participants used to express themselves.
The AMC students showed great interest and admiration about the Pireos Building of the Benaki Museum itself, which - designed by the architects Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas - is an exceptional example of architectural renovation that preserved the initial building plan. The visit led to a detailed discussion of students with their lecturer about the design and presentation of an artwork, as well as about the nature of architecture and art itself.
